Some people tend to over compensate in situations where they feel insecure. When such a person is unsure what to do, he tends to straighten his back, lifts up his head, enlarge his chest and deepen his voice. He is trying to control the situation by filling the void with his own presence in an attempt to look invulnerable and invincible. When the threat relents, he returns to his normal stature and volume.
We see many animals literally enlarge themselves when they feel threatened: Cats raise their backs and enlarge their tales to try and intimidate an opponent. These are reactions that are meant to scare off the other animal by saying 'you don't want to mess with me'. Again, when the situation is less threatening, the faŤade is discarded.
People also are able to enlarge themselves in a symbolic manner. Wearing uniforms with medals and regalia, driving in big cars, and wearing sparkling jewelry are ways of showing others that they are present and impressive. Inflated titles are another symbolic example.
